Eggnog

I am hosting a cheesy carol night for my family on Christmas Eve.  The menu (for now):

Appetiser
Devils on Horseback - two versions - prunes wrapped in bacon and mussels wrapped in bacon

Main
Quinoa pilaf
Vege kebabs OR antipasto platter if we can't be bothered with the BBQ
Garden salad
KFC chicken for whoever wants it (we're bringing a bit of Japanese Xmas tradition to NZ!)

Desert
Vanilla icecream with Russian fudge sauce

Drinks
Eggnog
Homemade lemonade

I just tried an eggnog recipe - the only one I could find that we had the ingredients for (and that can be made in 2 minutes, and with a baby bottle as a measurer and an old honey pot as a shaker ; ) )...

60 mls whiskey
1 tsp icing sugar
1 whole egg
150mls milk

Mix all with ice. Pour into a collins glass. Top with nutmeg.
I'm guessing this serves 2 people, because a small amount of it nearly knocked me over.
And the verdict? Bleurgh. Too whiskey-y, and too raw egg-y.

Instead, this recipe looks A LOT nicer:

6 eggs
2 extra egg yolks
4 cups whole milk
3/4 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons of sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1 cup bourbon
(see the link for directions - but they include boiling then cooling most of the ingredients).

Of course, I don't have all the ingredients now, but this might be the one to go with on Friday night (will make some virgin version for the kiddies too).

My two beautiful boys checking out tonight's gorgeous dinner - fish gently fried in butter, onigiri (rice balls) and salad with some veges and herbs from our garden ; )

And...oh my goodness - I just realised I planned a whole dinner party menu and it was EASY. Oh my! Entertainment city here I come!
